DESPONDENCY SETS IN

Friday morning, 10th August. Not a great week so far - physically Janet is still progressing slowly, but after 6 weeks in hospital her mood has become blacker, with very few bright moments.

She has had physio every day this week and the physiotherapists are very happy with her progress. On Monday though, she was very depressed and was in the frame of mind that she was never going to get better. By Tuesday, she was slightly better in mood, but still down.

When I visited on Wednesday lunchtime, she was a bit cheerier and Dr Young, from the GP practice next door, had examined her right leg and told Janet that she did not have cellulitis. The swelling in her leg is perfectly normal after having had a blood clot and the swelling will go down in its own good time. No timescale placed on this. Her prescription of penicillin will stop immediately and the physio is to continue. Her walking continues to improve and she has been down to the gym each day this week - she walks with a stick to the lift and practices walking with the stick at the gym, as well as using the parallel bars. In the two weeks she has been at Hay Lodge hospital, she has improved hugely with her walking.

Yesterday, Thursday, should have been a good day as I was taking her to lunch at Coltmans at the bottom of the High Street. This is one of our favourite restaurants in Peebles, but she was in a foul mood for the first couple of hours together and threatened to go back to the hospital, once we had been seated in the restaurant. We stayed, and for the last hour we chatted quite normally and she did perk up a bit. Previous to the meal, we had gone to M&Co., a clothes shop in the High Street and Janet had bought a couple of tops and a pair of trousers.

Maria visited in the evening and Janet was in a slightly happier frame of mind last night.

Julie flies up tonight and I will pick her up at the airport about 7pm. She is staying until Monday evening and it will be good to see her. All three of my children will have visited in the past 3 weeks, which is great as we obviously didn't manage down last month to see everyone.
