TWO BRIEF HOLIDAY BREAKS - IN CHESHIRE AND LONDON

Sunday, 14th October.

So, that's another two weeks gone by. Janet's still doing well and visiting the O.T. and Physiotherapist only every two weeks now. She sees both of them next week, as well as having a doctor's appointment on Tuesday. I should also mention that Janet was given the go-ahead to walk downstairs on her own, provided I was also in the house. Progress indeed!

We drove down to Frodsham in Cheshire, where we stayed for two nights at The Forest Hills Hotel. Caitlin's 18th birthday party was held in a private room on the Friday night and on the Saturday night we had dinner in the hotel with Ruth's family and Neil and Charlotte. Some photos follow.

On the Sunday morning, we left early, about 8.30, to make the journey back to Peebles. We arrived home just after noon, and in time to see the singles matches on the last day of the Ryder Cup. Excellent timing!

I played golf three times in the following week and visited the dentist to repair a broken tooth. Janet continues to do well and we were both looking forward to going down to London on Monday for a few days.

Lovely trip down in the train to London - first class travel, of course. Taxi to our hotel in Soho, very nice room and very centrally located. Having got one heavy suitcase and Janet extracted from the taxi I forgot to remove my backpack, which had Janet's medication, iPad and our concert tickets in it. Panic! There was little we could do, but wait and see if the taxi driver handed the backpack into the Lost Property Office and we wouldn't know that until the next morning. As we were deciding what to do about replacing Janet's medication, I received a call in our room from reception, telling me that the taxi driver had just phoned the hotel to say he had found the bag and would drop it off in 5 minutes. What a life saver!! Incredibly grateful, I shook his hand and gave him £20, which he didn't really want to take, but I insisted.

The next day we visited the Shard, well the Aqua Shard, only 32 floors up. If you wish to go up to The View on the Shard, you each have to pay £30. Anyway, we had superb weather during our London visit and our view from 32 floors up was brilliant. See photos below.

Tuesday evening saw us at The London Palladium to see Procol Harum, a group from the Sixties, famous for their hit in 1967 "A Whiter Shade Of Pale". The only original member is the singer and pianist, Gary Brooker, still in very good voice. They played with a full symphony orchestra and the English Chamber Choir. Procol Harum's music lends itself to orchestral playing and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. They played for over 2 1/2 hours and Janet enjoyed it too, albeit she thought some of the songs were "a bit loud".

We did a lot of walking on our last day in London, Wednesday, maybe too much for Janet. We walked to Selfridges on Oxford Street, had lunch, walked back to the hotel and then met my children in the evening for a birthday meal at The Bananatree in Soho. A very enjoyable day though!

Back home on Thursday and our train arrived on time in Edinburgh Waverley. Coming out of the station, I had to carry our heavy suitcase up the stairs myself as it was too big for the escalator. Janet took the escalator herself, lost her right hand grip on the rail and fell backwards on to the moving steps. Luckily, there was a young couple right behind her who cushioned her fall somewhat and all I saw when I was half way up the adjacent stairs was Janet lying on her back being helped up by the couple. By the time I got to the top of the stairs, she was standing and crying - quite a fright for her and everyone. She calmed down quickly and confirmed she had not hit her head and in fact wasn't sore at all. It was really just the shock of it all. We made our way to the bus stop and got the bus home to Peebles. An eventful few days!

Well, it's Sunday now and the past three days have been very quiet, thankfully. Janet has a visit to the doctor on Tuesday (which she needs as she is concerned about increasing tightness she is feeling in her right arm and leg), the physiotherapist on Tuesday afternoon and the O.T. and Stroke Group on Wednesday afternoon. Hopefully, we shall see Janet's condition continue to improve, although bearing in mind it is only just over 3 months since she had her stroke.
